🔥 How to Use LightBurn to Trace Images and Create SVG Files for Laser Cutting & Engraving

LightBurn is a powerful, user-friendly software designed for laser cutting and engraving. It allows you to import, edit, and create vector graphics, making it ideal for crafting custom designs. One of its standout features is the ability to trace bitmap images and convert them into vector paths (SVGs), which can then be used for precise laser operations.

🖼️ Step 1: Import Your Image

Open LightBurn.

Go to File > Import and select the image file you want to trace (e.g., PNG, JPG).

The image will appear on your workspace.

✏️ Step 2: Trace the Image to Create Vectors

Select the imported image by clicking on it.

Navigate to Tools > Trace Image or press Alt + T.

In the Trace Image window, you’ll see a preview of the vector trace over your image.

Adjust the following settings to refine the trace:

Cutoff and Threshold: Control the brightness range for tracing.

Ignore less than: Ignores small artifacts below a certain pixel area.

Smoothness: Determines how smooth the traced curves are.

Optimize: Reduces node count for simpler paths.

Fade Image: Dims the original image to better see the vector overlay.

Once satisfied, click OK to apply the trace.LightBurn Documentation

Your image is now converted into vector paths, ready for editing or laser operations.

🎨 Step 3: Edit and Prepare Your Design

Use LightBurn’s editing tools to modify your vector paths as needed.

Assign different colors to different parts of your design to represent various operations:

Red: Cutting

Blue: Line Engraving

Black: Fill Engraving

Adjust the layer settings by double-clicking on each layer in the Cuts/Layers panel to set parameters like speed, power, and number of passes.

🧪 Step 4: Preview and Export

Click on the Preview button to simulate the laser path and ensure everything looks correct.

If satisfied, you can:

Save the project as a LightBurn file (.lbrn) for future editing.

Export the vector paths as an SVG file by going to File > Export.

🖨️ Step 5: Send to Laser

Ensure your laser cutter is properly connected and configured in LightBurn.

Place your material on the laser bed and focus the laser as required.

Click Start to begin the laser operation.

By following this guide, you can efficiently convert images into vector paths using LightBurn and prepare them for laser cutting or engraving. This process enhances your creative capabilities, allowing for precise and customized designs.
